I come from a dance and body/mind integration background which accounts for my holistic approach to fitness and wellbeing. In the year 2000, I reoriented my career in community arts to personal training and group fitness for people over 50.
At that time, the medical system was struggling to cope with the growing demands of an aging population riddled with the challenges of chronic disease; heart disease, diabetes type 2, cancers of all kinds, arthritis, hip and knee replacements, osteoporosis, hearing and eye problems, etc. And this, was at the onset of the Tsunami wave of the older adult phenomenon.
The fact that in the year 2000 this was already becoming a problem made me realize the urgency of the situation and the potential it had to drain the resources and health of the community. I understood this because I had witnessed what a rich and important resource my 50+ clientele was. I felt moved to take action.
I embarked whole-heartedly on this journey and it lead me to becoming an Active Aging Specialist. I had to do a lot of research and experimentation. And I did. And I found innovative solutions for the myriad problems my clients presented me with. I learned to modify, adapt and progress exercise in order to safely rehabilitate and pre-train painful, de-conditioned bodies. I came to understand that this pre-training process was the very important first step in successfully training my 50+ clients. This is also the step which is neglected or forgotten and why so many people give up on their training goals.
I have great compassion for the challenge that aging presents. I have witnessed … after all the hours, weeks and years I have spent with my Boomer and Senior clients, the many difficult challenges my clients have had to face. Some are heart wrenching. I feel honoured that I can use my abilities in the service of such a noble cause as active aging. I have learned so much from you. Now I have so much to give.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I’ve always loved moving, so being active is not a challenge for me. But finding balance (is hard) in my life between work, family and pleasure has been hard. I’ve faced many challenges and I’ve learned that I can overcome them. I found that I had to be very persevering to not give up on myself. I’ve tried many different approaches in the areas of physical activity, nutrition and stress management. Some I am successful with, some I am not. But there is no doubt that the things I do on a regular basis, the things I am constant with have the greatest impact and have led to integrated changes in my life. A little bit all the time is the easiest way to make change and maintain balance.
For example, an important change resulted when I first start to teach yoga and learned how to breathe. I didn’t even realize it, but it affected everything else in my life! I became much calmer and less emotionally stressed. Life became easier. (Good Habits: learn to breathe, take a walk, have a green juice) I have a painful sacroiliac weakness, and I discovered that walking uphill helps to relieve the problem significantly. Pheww!! I am so happy about that! Another important change I made 2 years ago was to include a green juice in my daily diet. This had a profound effect on my level of energy, my skin, my digestion and elimination, and it has really helped me to cope with the symptoms of menopause. You see, the gradual layering in of simple good habits creates so much energy and well being, that what is in the beginning a discipline and an effort becomes an enjoyable and indispensable way of life.
