If you have been reading these Fit Tips you know that good health and disease prevention are based on making lifestyle changes in the areas of what you eat, what you do (your physical activity) and how you think. In recent articles I have been writing about the role the mind plays in our health and well being. In The Balancing Act I talked about mindfulness, focus and meditation and how these calm and quiet the mind creating serenity and clarity. In Dare I Say … Love I underlined how love and happiness bring joy and beauty into our lives. These powerful emotions are actually manifestations of our thoughts and beliefs.
Scientific research has shown the mind to be so potent that thoughts alone (imagining) about situations, actions, feelings can produce exactly the same physiological (body) responses as though one were actually doing them! Astounding. The mind is considered to be the most instrumental factor in our health and well being because the body follows the mind. This statement is not to be taken lightly. But what does it actually mean?
However different our feelings, thoughts and actions may seem they are all expressions of energy. Energy is the animating principle of life. We are energy. Our bodies emit the energy of our thoughts and feelings and they become a creative force in our lives. This process is so subtle and so profound that each one of us is unique. This fact, which we take so much for granted, is remarkable and magnificent.
I recently watched The Secret on DVD and was reminded about the law of attraction. Which, simply stated, means whatever you focus your thoughts and feelings on is what you attract. The law of attraction does not discern between good and bad or right and wrong. The law of attraction matches energy with like energy. This is a profound and provocative thought. Could it be that each and every one of us is totally responsible for our lives, how we live them and what happens in them? Radical. It is much easier to blame others. But, if you allow yourself to consider the idea seriously … a very empowering possibility surfaces … you can consciously create your life.
As a matter of curiosity and conscience, I decided to observe my thoughts and feelings. I was shocked to find how many negative (I use this word to describe what is not affirming) thoughts and feelings I harbour. And I am a positive, up-beat, happy girl! I realised that my negative thoughts whether towards myself, my child, my partner etc., actually belied feelings of fear; fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, fear of hurt. In truth I was projecting those negative thoughts to protect myself from feeling my fears. Oh so very human but not very liberating.
I invite you to observe your thoughts and feelings and replace your “negativity” with thoughts and feelings of gratitude, of happiness and triumphant thought, and see how your life can be transformed.
And, speaking of transformation, the Fall is a wonderful time to take action for your health; build up your fitness reserve, attend to losing some weight, manage your stress or get into better shape for your winter activities. The body follows the mind, and the mind follows the body. They work together in a most beautiful and complex way.
