The melodious honking of the Canada geese and the glorious colours announce that shorter and colder days are on their way. Already?! September was fantastic. The Quebec we all adore. Let’s hope that October holds more of the same so we can continue to stock up on vitamin D and cheerfulness. Have you noticed that life is just more wonderful when you are feeling cheerful? Food tastes better, people are nicer and obstacles are easier to overcome. In ideal times cheerfulness is easier to achieve and maintain. Ideal times come and go. We can not boast that our planet earth is in an ideal time. That being so we need to learn how to cultivate and safeguard that ideal condition within ourselves. So where to we turn?
Spiritual teachings of all kinds advance the idea that we are ONE. Science as well searches for the common denominators and the unifying principles. Life is a supremely vast and complex reality that spirituality, science and we the individual seek to grasp and understand. We have the universe (multiple universes). We have the planet (planets). We have life forms (animal, vegetable, human, unknown). We have species and races. We have worlds, continents, countries, communities and families. We have the individual. We have DNA. We have nuclear medicine, particle theory and quantum physics. Matter and Energy. Macrocosm and microcosm, fractuals, the part reflected in the whole, the whole reflected in the part, visible and invisible. The complexity is astronomical. A mystery’s mystery! We do not fully understand the power of our very being. The power to be, to change, to do, to become, to heal, to be at peace, to be part of the whole. Now take a deep breath (after that big brain stretch) and come back to center.
Tibetan Buddhists say that you have to be aware of your death, face it, and prepare for it to fully appreciate life. Not to take it for granted. Not to waste the opportunity for joy, for love, for appreciating beauty and for liberation. Now take a deep breath into your heart center and realize your heart’s desire for this precious life.
Vibrating in every part of our organism; our mind, our heart, our cells is this ability to resonate with the whole; the planet, humanity, the universe, the unknown. This truth is so magnificent, so overwhelming that most of us just simply ignore it. And in so doing, limit ourselves to an unconsciously contracted life, bound by our myriad fabulations (and those fed to us) of unworthiness, misery and powerlessness. Now you may be asking yourself “What drug is Lisa on?” Breathing of course! Please, take a deep breath in and exhale slowly, softly.
I am discovering that breathing is the most direct route to calming my self, to being in the present moment with what really is (nothing and everything), to centering and opening myself so that I can make conscious choices about how I act, rather than react. Breathing slows my life down to a manageable pace by creating space and non density in my body and mind. Breathing nourishes my cells, improves my circulation, helps eliminate tension and in so doing supports my vitality. Breathing in itself is the key to a meditative state of mind. Breathing quiets the nervous system and the voice of ego so that consciousness (your deep intelligence, that which is aware of being part of the whole) can speak clearly to you, guide and direct you in making choices which will help you achieve cheerfulness. So I say use all you’ve got to cultivate cheerfulness and don’t neglect the source of unconditional happiness, love and goodness which lies within you. Harmonize your little self and your big self to the melody of the honking Canada geese, to the glorious fall colours, to the deep, quieting and cleansing breath. Lift the corners of your lips and direct your smile inward as you nestle into the center of yourself refuged in the greatness of ONE.
