Vitamin D

Do you know where you can get vitamin D for free? From the sun, of course. Five gold stars for those of you who knew the answer. And, do you know what vitamin D can do for you? Well, it is nothing short of amazing.

Studies show that this perfectly safe, all-natural substance shields your body against diabetes, helps to dramatically reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, kills cancer cells on contact…without harming your healthy cells, works to maintain healthy blood pressure levels and helps lower bad cholesterol. Fabulous.

Vitamin D supercharges your immune system and boosts your defenses against germs, bacteria and infectious disease. When circulating in the blood, it can successfully help to prevent and treat multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, osteoporosis … in all over 20 different diseases! Vitamin D improves your mood, increases your physical and mental energy and, for all of you suffering from leg cramps and don’t understand why … could it be a lack of vitamin D? Apparently most of us are quite vitamin D deficient and therefore at greater risk for ill health and disease. Doctors are now recommending that people who live in northern countries supplement with vitamin D in the fall, winter and spring seasons.

Now back to sunlight and a free source of vitamin D. But Lisa (I can hear you protesting) what about , sun damaged skin, free radicals and premature aging!!! Well I am sorry to have to tell you that most sun screens contain 5 different carcinogens, and, they not only block out the UV rays but also block the production of vitamin D – which is essential to your health and well being because your body is intricately designed to interact with the sun. You simply can’t function properly without it. Oh no, you lament, now what do I do? Read the following practical tips.

Fun in the sun:
  1. Don’t be extreme; neither sit out unprotected all day nor lather yourself up all the time
  2. Get 15 -20 minutes of direct sunlight on your body everyday. That’s it. That’s what you need for a good dose of vitamin D. More of course is good too, unless you burn yourself that is.
  3. During the peak hours, sit in the shade, cover up with light clothing and a hat, or buy non carcinogenic sunscreen (perhaps they can help you at the health food store)
  4. If you feel like you are burning, you probably are and if you can’t feel it, you are probably drinking too much beer …
  5. Protect your eyes with sunglasses – but, vitamin D is processed through the eyes as well so take your sunglasses off in the morning before the sun gets too strong
  6. Ask your Dr. to test you for vitamin D levels
  7. Respect your Dr’s recommendations regarding eye disease, skin disease or other sensitivities
  8. Read Your Best Health Under the Sun by Jon Herring and Dr. Al Sears to learn science backed facts about sunlight, nutrition and vitamin D and how to prevent disease. Learn too about dosage and proper protection. www.alsearsmd.com/sunbook/

Mostly enjoy the summer outdoors. Swim, walk, bike. BBQ. Laugh and be merry while you effortlessly stock up on that invaluable, all natural substance called vitamin D. Loose the fear, embrace sunlight …and if you can’t, take a vitamin D supplement. My summer session is up and running, are you? If not please let me give you a hand. Now, I’m going for a swim! G’bye.
