The Problem of Pain – Part 1

Arrgh pain! Many of my clients suffer from it … perhaps you do to. Headache pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, back pain, leg pain, knee pain, foot pain, pain in the neck pain … More often than not we simply try to ignore pain in the hopes that it will go away. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. In truth pain is a sign, from your body, that something is amiss and needs attending to. Therefore, the sooner we address pain and take care of ourselves, the better. So why do we ignore it? Perhaps we are not sure what to do about it, or who to consult. Or maybe … getting treatment is expensive … I have had treatments … they don’t really make a long term difference. These points are valid. None-the-less the fact remains that pain has an insidious effect on our well-being; affecting how we feel, and interfering with what we can or can’t do. Left untreated the problem can worsen, creating more pain and a more serious problem (that still needs to be dealt with!) So what do we do?

We may be tempted to blame ageing as the cause of our problem (and therefore give up on it!), but to do so is not entirely fair. Degeneration of the body is impacted more directly by poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, stress and negativity than by the passing of time. (Ha !). On the bright side though, this is good news because it means with proper supplementation (to make up for the loss of adequate nutrition to the cells – which are at the base of all human functions), conscious and regular exercise to stretch, strengthen and balance the body, and stress management to quiet the heart and mind for healing, fortifying and enjoyment, we are taking a huge step towards healing what ails us.

Pain comes in varying degrees of seriousness; aches and pains, pain related to old or new injuries, chronic pain related to disease and/or other factors as well as combinations thereof. Of course different pains require different treatment prescriptions. Generally treatment would require:

  • Phase 1 . Rehabilitation, nutritional advice and pain management techniques (Professional service).
  • Phase 2 . Body awareness: better posture and body movement (Good teachers or private trainers).
  • Phase 3 . Pain Free / Pain Managed: integration of a lifestyle change based on an a regular practise of phases 1 and 2.

Pain requires tender loving care, patience and perseverance. You simply can’t force pain or injury away. The taking of pills is a solution (sometimes, a good solution) but pills do not necessarily cure pain, and they certainly don’t encourage self-responsibility. To participate actively in one’s health and well-being is ultimately the real key to your success. To maintain a daily healthy lifestyle is to guarantee it.

Next time The Problem of Pain Part 2 : Aches and Pains. In the meantime invest in your well-being and take action for your pain. You won’t regret it. Many solutions exist. To help you, I would like to compile a list of professionals and post it on my website. If you would like to make recommendations, send an e-mail or call. Thank you and have a great day.
